Church of Jesus Christ Pledges Help to Improve Water Sanitation in Dinagat

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated 15 million pesos (approximately $260,000) to the Dinagat Islands Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) Project, which began in November 2024 and is set to be completed by January 2026.

In partnership with A Single Drop for Safe Water, UNICEF, and CFSI, the project aims to provide climate-vulnerable communities with increased access to climate-resilient sanitation facilities and a safe water supply. The initiative seeks to have all municipalities in the Dinagat Islands declared Zero Open Defecation zones and to establish local septage treatment facilities using the life stabilization method, along with the construction and improvement of water systems.

As a key humanitarian priority, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints strives to provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) access to all in need. To achieve this, the Church collaborates with various organizations and local communities worldwide to enhance services and strengthen overall systems, ensuring lasting solutions that promote self-reliance.

Atty. Niel Demerey, Chief-of-Staff to the Governor, recalled the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Odette: “We were devastated and directly hit by the typhoon. We had to rebuild, recover, and rehabilitate. There was no proper water supply or sanitary toilets, and it impacted the health of our community as a whole.”

He further expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thanks to this project, assistance is being more effectively delivered to our communities. We are truly grateful to all the benefactors involved. This initiative has changed many lives—not only giving hope but also empowering people to become self-sufficient. We are thankful for your support and remain open to helping strengthen future programs and projects.”

Steve Dobb, Emergency Response Manager, added, “Our humanitarian work focuses on helping the most vulnerable, regardless of race, religion, or nationality.”
