Farmer's Association Receives Goats From LDS Charities

Twenty-seven members of the Bugabuga Upland Farmer's Association (BUFA) in Villaba, Leyte are recent recipients of 27 goats (25 does and 2 Billy goats). LDS Charities and Visayas State University joined together with BUFA in this project. BUFA constructed two goathouses, the Visayas State University provided the required technical training to each family receiving a goat, and LDS Charities donated the goats.

The project's purpose is to earn income to sustain self-reliance efforts through the sale of goat offspring and other products from goat-based enterprises such as goat milk, goat manure, vermicomposting and forage planting materials.

Each qualified member received and will care for one goat on the condition that he/she will establish a 200-square meter pasture where forage for the goat can be obtained. The offspring from these goats will go to association members who have not yet received a goat. The goats have already produced offspring and other members of BUFA have begun to benefit from this project by receiving a goat to care for.

The Bugabuga Upland Farmer's Association was nominated by Visayas State University in a competition for the most outstanding association assisted by the University. They received the first place award for best application of training and for their accurate reporting methods. The cash award was Php 25,000 plus 25 sacks of feed valued at Php 25,000. In addition, they received a Php 3,000 award that day for being the most organized and jolly participants.
