This year's theme, "Family-Oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development 2025," proposed by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), highlights the importance of integrating family-centered policies into national development agendas.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) chairs the National Committee on the Filipino Family (NCFF), which spearheads the annual IDF celebrations in the Philippines. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is one of the member agencies actively supporting the NCFF.
Elder George Kenneth Lee, Area Seventy, represented the Church during the IDF celebratory program where he gave the opening prayer. “The Church has always been actively supporting the cause of the Filipino family,” Elder Lee shared, “and as long-time members of the NCFF, we are pleased to support the DWSD on this latest initiative.”
The event also marked the launch of the “Pamilya Sa Bagong Pilipinas Registry” led by DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian. “This newly-developed registry is a tool through which we can ensure that every family is seen, heard, and supported,” shared the DSWD chief. “It will provide a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the needs of every Filipino family that will enable the agency to deliver social welfare services more efficiently and effectively.”
As the Church representative, Elder Lee signed the NCFF “Pledge of Commitment” to build stronger families for a stronger nation. “As disciples of Jesus Christ, we believe that we must ensure that aside from the spiritual, the temporal needs of the family must be met which will help in the self-reliance of many individuals,” emphasized Elder Lee.
As a long-time collaborator in promoting and advancing family-oriented initiatives, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has partnered with DSWD in various programs that benefit the Filipino family, particularly the annual celebration of National Family Week.
“Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live,” the Church’s Proclamation on the Family reaffirms.
