In a desire to help fresh senior high school graduates and out-of-school youth become more self-reliant, the San Gabriel Philippines Stake (Diocese) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) Recognition Day and mini job fair for 150 attendees on 30 August 2019.
The event was to recognize individuals age 18 to 25 years old who had completed the 10-day free training that PESO provided as part of their JobStart Philippines Program.

As the Church believes and teaches the Principle of Self-Reliance, San Gabriel Stake President Sherwin Nones supported the initiative in order to help the youth in Biñan City become better equipped when they enter the job force. He thanked the effort of PESO JobStart for the said training and encouraged the members to support this program.
Of the 150 present in the event, 95 were graduates of the said program. The rest were facilitators and human resource specialists from partner companies who conducted the mini job fair. Also present were local government official officials of Biñan City and officers of Biñan Lion’s Club.
Ms. Dominique R. Tutay, Director IV of the Department of Labor and Employment, was also present in the low-key but a momentous event and shared nuggets of wisdom to the new graduates.
"You need to have the right attitude and values -- not just skills -- as an employee,” Tutay said. “You should care about your job and the company you work for. Don't quit your job when you get scolded. Thank your parents and your teachers for helping you achieve your goals."
The free 10-day training that the students underwent consisted mainly of developing life skills, such as writing effective resumes, being confident during job interviews, identifying their priorities, setting goals, continuing their education, and developing work ethics and values.
Community Involvement of the Church
This is not the first time that the San Gabriel Philippine Stake of the Church provided the venue for the local government units of Biñan City. Since 2015, the Church meetinghouse has been used by Latter-day Saint Charities and GoForward Biñan Foundation, Inc. for training and distribution of wheelchairs to individuals with mobility issues.
