Rise and Rebuild International Foundation (R&R), together with LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led the turn-over ceremony of a comfort room for Lahug Elementary School (LES) in Cebu City on 4 February 2018.
Ricardo Belita, LES Brigada coordinator, facilitated the event along with the school principal, Dr. Charlie Salve, and Elder and Sister Zorn from the Church Welfare Department.
“Thank you so much. There are no words enough to express our gratitude. This addition will truly be a great help in maintaining hygiene for students,” Belita expressed. The school is currently renovating their old toilets to cope with the rising number of students due to the K-12 program. “We promise to take care of the facility and in maintaining its cleanliness and functionality,” Belita added.
“Our 8,000 students will benefit from this addition,” said Dr. Salve. The school has 6,000 elementary and 2,000 high school students who are attending at shifting schedules. “We already contacted our division engineers for the water connection,” Dr. Salve added.
Ray Goodson, one of the first full-time missionaries assigned to serve in the Philippines in 1961, organized the Rise and Rebuild International Foundation. The purpose of R&R is to assist and lift the poor, to give aid in the face of emergencies, to provide free preventive dentistry, cataract eye clinics, and assist in the problems of everyday living. “My wife was a teacher. This project means a lot to her due to her love of children. If you can keep it well maintained you’ll be surprised what more we might do for you,” said Mr. Goodson who was with his wife, Debra.
“It is really beneficial for us all and will be a great comfort not only for the students, but also for the teachers,” commented Rendon Tantiado, the president of the Supreme Student Government. “It is a great blessing,” Tantiado added.
The ceremony began with a ribbon cutting and followed by a program. Present in the even were the teachers, school staff, and students.
