Nevin’s Journey: A Heart Full of Faith, A Voice That Inspires

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that God blesses us with talents to inspire and uplift others. We are also taught that we are responsible for sharing these talents and letting our light shine to make it develop and grow.

Nevin Garceniego’s story as an 11-year-old artist and musician reflects how faith, hard work, and humility can magnify sacred gifts.

Nevin’s musical ability became apparent at an early age. According to his parents, he started humming melodies as early as 18 months old, even from his crib. By age three, he confidently sang “I Am a Child of God,” a song he learned from home and Primary class.

Growing up in a musical family, Nevin was constantly surrounded by music and encouragement. “Nevin always joins his siblings as the little vocalist,” said his mother, Stella.

Nevin’s parents shared that he has never been shy about sharing his talents. From joining the Stake Primary Choir to performing at Church events, he continues to use his gifts to bless and inspire others. In 2023, he began entering singing competitions, earning the titles of Grand Champion in the ISAAL (Inter-School Academic and Athletic League Singing Competition) and Pop Star Quezon City Kids.

For Nevin, these accomplishments are blessings from God, and he is deeply grateful for them.

To further develop his talents, Nevin embraced a larger stage this year by auditioning for The Voice Kids Philippines - a very popular show in the Philippines. Nervous but determined, Nevin recalls the roller-coaster emotions he had at the show's blind audition:

“I was really anxious since it was my first time performing on national television. Before stepping on stage, I said a quick prayer, asking for help to stay calm and remember the lyrics. I’m so grateful my prayer was answered — I gave my best and turned two chairs!”

Nevin wholeheartedly displayed his talents on the big stage and gained praise from his mentor on the show, Pablo Nase, who noted that Nevin’s singing talents were remarkably smooth and developed for his age.

“Coach Pablo is a great coach. He always reminds me not to think of it as a competition when I perform. He tells me to feel the song and own the stage,” Nevin said.

To Nevin, The Voice Kids is more than a competition; it is also an opportunity to inspire others, especially primary children and young men and women like him.

“The most rewarding part is using my songs to touch hearts. My faith in Jesus Christ gives me strength during rehearsals and performances. I always pray for His guidance to stay confident and deliver the message of my music.”

Nevin’s family, regardless of the competition, continues to guide him in living Christlike principles and becoming more like the Savior.

“My mom and dad always remind me to set a good example in my words, thoughts, and actions. They teach me to be kind, humble, patient, and understanding. My mom always says never to forget to pray and thank Heavenly Father while asking for strength and guidance,” he said.

Even offstage, Nevin strives to embody the teachings of Jesus Christ.

“I empathize with and comfort my friends who weren’t selected, reminding them they gave their best effort. I also try to show kindness and respect to everyone I meet, whether it’s fellow contestants or production staff. It’s my way of sharing my faith.”

Despite the demands of rehearsals and competitions, Nevin remains committed to his Church responsibilities. He faithfully attends primary classes and cherishes his CTR ring, engraved with a temple, as a daily reminder to be a good disciple of Jesus Christ.

Nevin expresses deep gratitude for the unwavering support of his family, Church leaders, and friends, who encourage him to do his best in all he does.

To those with big dreams like his, Nevin shares this advice:

“Always trust Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to guide you. Lean on your family and Church leaders for support, and believe in the power of prayer and faith to help you achieve your goals.”
