Local Church Community Rallies to Support Muntinlupa Fire Victims

In response to a recent fire in Barangay Poblacion, Muntinlupa City, on July 8, 2024, local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints swiftly mobilized to provide essential relief items to nearly 50 families who lost their homes and possessions.

According to local reports, the fire razed about 20 houses and destroyed P175,000 worth of properties.

Mayor Ruffy Biazon stated that the 47 families affected by the fire were based on a partial estimate from the city’s Social Services Department (SSD). As of this writing, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Latter-day Saints from the Muntinlupa 2nd Ward gathered for a one-day repacking activity on July 17, 2024. These volunteers assembled 50 care kits, including food, water, hygiene items, sleeping mats, and other essentials.

A few days later, the volunteers, including full-time missionaries led by Nomar Nivera, president of the Las Piñas Philippines Stake (diocese), delivered the relief items to the temporary shelter provided by the Muntinlupa City Government.

In a short message, President Nivera reiterated fundamental Christian beliefs that we are all "sons and daughters" of God and that it is our duty to look after each other and unselfishly help one another, especially during dire times.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to help those affected by the fire that burned their houses and everything they have. All of the affected families are so happy that somehow, they have something to add to their plate and other sanitary goods that could ease their burdens,” he said.

When tragedy strikes, ward and stake leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ begin carrying out their emergency plan by gathering in a predetermined location where they can direct relief efforts.

The Church provides relief in situations of civil unrest, famine, and natural disasters by supplying short-term resources such as food, water, shelter, clothing, medical supplies, and hygiene kits.

This response is carried out under the direction of local leadership, often in conjunction with regional and international relief organizations. Members assist by distributing supplies and participating in cleanup efforts.
