    LDSC Donates 40,000 Pairs of Slippers to Indigent Students in 13 Regions

    For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, education serves moral and practical purposes, such as making positive contributions to society and being becoming self-reliant.  However, disruptions, be it mental, emotional, physical or geographical issues, impede learning.

      Such is the case for the indigent students who reside in mountainous areas. Many of the students have to walk up to seven kilometers each direction to reach their schools daily. Most of these children walk bare feet, exposing their feet to elements that harm their well-being. This is especially true during the rainy season when the roads are muddy and slippery.

      To address the most urgent need of these students, Latter-day Saint Charities (LDSC), the humanitarian arm of the Church, partnered with the Department of Education in a nationwide initiative to provide 40,000 pairs of slippers to the underprivileged but deserving students attending in 226 elementary schools in 13 regions.

      Ms. Caroline Labrague, the Deputy Secretary of DepEd, and her staff identified 20 districts that have the most number of indigent students. In collaboration with the DepEd division offices in the selected regions, priesthood leaders and LDSC representatives, and volunteers from non-government organizations repacked and distributed new pairs of sturdy slippers to approximately 40,000 children.
