LDSC, MMH Respond to Call for Aid in Davao

A series of challenges occurred in Davao City which affected thousands of Davaoeños. LDS Charities and Mormon Helping Hands provided aid and assistance to the victims.

Repacking for Fire Victims

The weather updates on the Tropical Storm Vinta in Mindanao did not hinder Mormon Helping Hands volunteers in Buhangin Stake from assisting in the repacking of items donated by LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The repacking was done in Sasa Meetinghouse last December 22 where 30 volunteers came to help for more than 12 hours.

At 10 in the morning on December 23, families and individuals whose homes were devastated by the fire caught on November 24 gathered together at Fatima Gym, Kilometer 11 Barangay Sasa, Davao City. More than 70 combined MHH & CSSDO – City Social Services and Development Office volunteers and barangay staff assisted during the distribution.

In expressing his gratitude, a father who lost his home in Muslim Village said, “Daghan kaayong salamat sa inyong gihatag sa amoa kay dako na ning tabang para sa amoa. Maski dili na masauli ang nawala sa amoa, at least naa kamo nagasuporta para sa amoa. Salamat.”

“Thank you very much for the help you have extended. Although nothing could bring back what were lost, at least you are there to support us. Thank you.”

Food, kitchen essentials, & sleeping kits were given to 450 households while 650 students received school bags and school supplies.

Repacking for Flood Victims

Mormon Helping Hands volunteers immediately responded to the city government’s call for more volunteers to help in the repacking of relief goods donated by the city government, various local agencies, and private companies for the flood victims in Davao. News update states that thousands of families and individuals from several barangays were affected by the flood in Davao City on Friday night, December 22.

Due to the volume and magnitude of donations, more volunteers were highly demanded. Around 100 MHH volunteers from Davao & Buhangin Stakes joined thousands of other volunteers from various groups and organizations on December 27 and 28 at the Task Force Davao Headquarters located in Sta. Ana Pier, Davao City.

Donations were distributed to the affected families on 30 and 31 December 2017.
