Family Home Evening: A Heaven-Inspired Program

As part of the 29th annual celebration of the National Family Week, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will broadcast a special show about its family home evening program on September 20, 2021 at 7:00 PM Philippine Time. With the title "Building Better Families through Family Home Evening", this virtual event will premiere on the Church's official Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Since 1915, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has established the Family Home Evening program. This program was designed to encourage Latter-day Saint parents to build and strengthen family relationships. Today, “family home evenings” are generally held weekly on Monday nights.

President Thomas S. Monson, the 16th President of the Church, has said, “We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest.”

A typical family home evening begins and ends with a prayer and usually includes singing, scripture reading, a short lesson on a religious or practical topic, and refreshments. Or, instead of a lesson, the family might participate in a service project or join in an activity together.

Family home evenings are geared to involve all members of the family. The Church provides family home evening materials, lesson outlines, and suggestions to help families of all faiths plan and implement this weekly time together.

Shane Natividad, a young single adult from Dasmariñas Stake (diocese), shared some of the blessings her family has received because of the family home evening program. She shared, "Family home evening has helped us connect spiritually as a family. It has also become a way for us to communicate concerns that we don't usually talk about in other casual settings."

The Family Home Evening program is designed for everyone. Recently married couples, fathers and mothers with children, single parents with children, couples who have no children at home, single adults in home evening groups, and those who live alone or with roommates can all be blessed by holding family home evening.
