Elder Kearon Leads Scholarship Donation Turnover to Caritas Manila

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in collaboration with Caritas Manila, the humanitarian arm of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines, has provided college-level educational support to a number of scholars under the care of Caritas Manila. This shared initiative underscores a shared commitment to empowering youth through education.

Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and his wife, Jennifer, led the handover of the donation on May 22, 2025. They were joined by Elder Carlos G. Revillo Jr., Philippines Area President, and his wife, Marie.

In addition to supporting scholars, the Church also extends its assistance to Caritas Manila’s child nutrition programs, provides medical equipment for clinics in underserved communities, and contributes to preventive health and disaster preparedness initiatives.

“We already have such warm feelings and gratitude for Caritas worldwide, and of course, here in the Philippines... To come here and meet our beloved scholars that you are helping and looking after is a glorious thing,” said Elder Kearon.

Elder Kearon reflected on the Church’s collaboration with Caritas during the European refugee crisis and praised the organization’s global mission to serve those in need, including its efforts in the Philippines, as a “wonderful” example of compassionate service.

“We are very grateful to hold hands with you in your wonderful endeavors and look forward to continuing service together, particularly for those who may otherwise be lost one way or another,” he added.

During the event, two scholars personally expressed their gratitude to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for helping them pursue and complete their college education. Three other scholars, who are currently based in provinces outside Metro Manila, conveyed their heartfelt thanks through video recordings.

Rev. Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual, Executive Director of Caritas Manila, expressed his gratitude to Elder Kearon and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for years of unwavering support for Caritas Manila’s humanitarian initiatives. He praised the Church’s continued collaboration with various organizations in efforts to uplift the lives of Filipinos in need, regardless of religion or belief.

Caritas Manila, along with Cebu Caritas, are also longstanding beneficiaries of the Church’s #LightTheWorld Giving Machines in the Philippines, an annual Christmas initiative that invites individuals to donate through vending machines by purchasing items for those in need rather than for themselves.

Elder Kearon also thanked Fr. Pascual for his dedicated leadership of Caritas Manila and the warm welcome extended during the visit to the organization’s office in Pandacan, Manila. As a gesture of appreciation, Elder Kearon and Elder Revillo presented Fr. Pascual with a Christus statue and a framed copy of "The Family: A Proclamation to the World."

Elder Kearon is currently on a 10-day ministering visit to the Philippines, during which he is scheduled to meet with members and local leaders of the Church, as well as engage with government officials, interfaith leaders, and media representatives across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
