Church of Jesus Christ Donates School Supplies to IP Learners in Remote Aklan Village

Under the blazing sun and after a grueling five-hour trek through steep, rugged terrain, representatives from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reached Sitio Maytaraw in Barangay Dalagsa-an, Libacao, Aklan on July 8, 2025, to deliver essential school supplies to Indigenous Peoples (IP) learners at Maytaraw Primary School.

The humanitarian team, led by missionaries Elder and Sister Wayman of Latter-day Saints Charities, was joined by soldiers from the 82nd Infantry (Bantay Laya) Battalion (82IB), headed by Lieutenant Colonel Jovert Pimentel. The soldiers not only ensured the group’s safety but also helped carry the supplies across hanging bridges and up mountainous slopes.

“Our soldiers are deeply grateful for the opportunity to take part in this meaningful initiative,” said Lt. Col. Pimentel. “The journey to Sitio Maytaraw was not easy, but seeing the smiles on the children’s faces made every step worth it.”

Also present were Barangay Aglonok Chairperson Michelle Dalumpines, President Harold Quimba of the Iloilo Philippines North Stake, Bishop Virchel Valderama, Brother Warlito Fundador of Calinog Ward, and teachers from Maytaraw Elementary School.

The team turned over:

  • 61 Monoblock chairs
  • 13 foldable plastic tables
  • Two boxes of curriculum materials, including reading textbooks and school supplies

This collaborative effort between the Church, local government, and the military exemplified the Filipino spirit of Bayanihan—working together to uplift underserved communities. Sitio Maytaraw is home to the Akeanon Bukidnon, an indigenous group living in the uplands near the borders of Iloilo and Antique.

This project is part of the Church’s ongoing humanitarian mission to bring hope, opportunity, and education to even the most remote corners of the Philippines.
