Church Launches 'Light the World with Love' Christmas Campaign in the Philippines

Starting December 1, several public transportation vehicles in Metro Manila will be carrying signs and posters reminding people to "light the world with love" during this season of giving. This is part of the #LightTheWorldWithLove Christmas campaign of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines.

In addition, small billboards of the #LightTheWorldWithLove campaign are also located in several stations of the Manila Metro Rail Transit (MRT) System line.

This year, a #LightTheWorldWithLove wrapped bus will be providing free rides for commuters traveling from EDSA to Dasmariñas and vice versa for the entire month of December.

Several electronic jeepneys or eJeeps, as well as regular jeepneys, are also wrapped with #LightTheWorldWithLove messages. The regular jeepneys will be providing free rides from December 1 - 31.

In 2018, jeepneys in Cebu were wrapped with posters and signs inviting people to participate in the #LightTheWorld campaign. That same year, the MRT trains were also wrapped with invitations for commuters to light the world through simple acts of service.

Giving Machines

Each Christmas, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrates the birth and life of Jesus Christ by inviting all to Light the World.

In 2018, the first and only Giving Machines in Asia were installed in the SM Megamall in Manila, Philippines. That year, close to 4,000 donors raised over Php800,000.00 which was donated to the Purple Centers Foundation, Caritas Manila, and UNICEF Philippines.

In 2019, the Giving Machines were installed at the TriNoma Mall in Manila, Philippines. The donations collected were given to the same partners with the addition of HERO Foundation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the Giving Machines were not opened in the Philippines in 2020 but direct donations were given to the Church's charity partners which totaled up to Php1.25 million.

In lieu of the Giving Machines this year, a direct donation will be given to Caritas Manila, UNICEF Philippines, and HERO Foundation.

Global Light the World Giving Machines

In 2019, there were 10 locations of the LTW Giving Machines. The U.S. locations included Gilbert, Arizona; Denver, Colorado; San Jose, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Laie (Oahu), Hawaii; New York City; and Orem and Salt Lake City, Utah. Worldwide, machines were placed in London, England, and Manila, Philippines.

As a whole, the Giving Machines generated nearly $6.3 million during the Christmas season with a total of 255,814 items purchased for donation purposes.

Temple Lighting

For more than 30 years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been lighting the Manila Philippines temple grounds as a Christmas tradition. On November 27, 2021, several government officials and religious leaders attended the annual temple lighting ceremony either in-person or online. The event was live-streamed through the official Facebook page and YouTube channel of the Church in the Philippines.

Lights are turned on from dusk until 10:00 pm daily, including Sundays and Mondays, until the end of December. The Manila Temple is located on Temple Drive, Green Meadows Quezon City.

The LED lights that are used to dot the green landscape of the temple grounds are energy- and cost-efficient. Additionally, the lights are cooler in temperature, which protects trees and plants from excess heat.

Light The World Campaign

In 2016, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints launched the "Light the World" Christmas initiative as part of its global effort to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and encourage people to serve others during the Christmas season. The initiative focuses on celebrating and sharing the light of Jesus Christ, the “light of the world” (John 8:12).

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained, “The whole purpose of this initiative is to celebrate and share the Light of Christ. What we hope people will do is not simply think about the Savior during this Christmas season, or even just learn more about Him. What we hope is that they will come to know Him by doing what He did.”
