Church Helps Improve Education and Health Services in Leyte Town

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is helping a coastal municipality in Leyte improve its residents’ access to better education and healthcare.

On September 14, 2026, the Church donated nearly PHP1 million worth of educational and medical equipment to the local government unit of Villaba, consisting of nearly PHP700,000 worth of classroom armchairs and PHP236,500 worth of medical supplies such as rapid dengue test kits, sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, fetal dopplers, glucometers, glucometer strips and glucometer lancets.

The items were turned over by Church representatives led by President Arnold Daradal of the Ormoc Philippines Stake to municipal officials during a ceremony at Villaba South Central School, and witnessed by school heads from seven campuses along with local health workers.

“We tend to help not only [Church] members in the community but also the people in the community,” President Daradal explained in response to media inquiries. He also shared that “if we are in the service of our fellow beings we are in the service of our God,” recalling a popular passage from the Book of Mormon (Mosiah 2:17).

Villaba Vice Mayor Edgar Veloso received the donation and thanked the Church for its generosity. “I would like to express my sincere appreciation for these generous contributions. This donation reflects your genuine concern for the welfare of the people of Villaba,” he said.

The donation helps fill an acute need for new educational materials and medical equipment. The Department of Education (DepEd) Leyte Division had identified Villaba as one of the communities with worn and dilapidated classroom chairs, while the Municipal Health Office’s effectivity was impacted by its limited resources.
