Church Coordinates Relief Efforts After Mindanao Earthquake

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is coordinating with government agencies and other organizations to support community response efforts following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani, in Mindanao on Monday, June 8, 2026.

The earthquake affected more than 88,000 individuals and damaged homes, public facilities, roads, utilities, and other infrastructure. According to government and news reports, at least 37 people have died, more than 470 have been injured, and four remain missing.

All missionaries of the Church assigned in affected areas are safe and accounted for.

Local Church leaders continue to assess needs and determine how best to provide food, water, sanitation support, and other immediate assistance. Local Church members, including some who were also affected by the earthquake, have begun assisting neighbors as communities work to recover.

Several Church meetinghouses in affected areas have been opened to accommodate evacuees after being assessed for safety and suitability for use as temporary shelters.

Church leaders reported that some members’ homes were damaged. Travel to and support for some affected member communities in Sarangani remain challenging due to a collapsed bridge and a landslide that covered a highway.

Latter-day Saints who require immediate support are encouraged to contact their local bishop or branch president.

This support includes immediate relief such as food, water, clothing, and medical supplies, as well as long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts.
