900 Elementary Students in Dumaguete Benefit from Better Vision

About 900 students from 10 Public Elementary School in Dumaguete City will now be able to learn and study well thanks to the Better Vision Project of the Latter-day Saints Charities in partnership with Mabuhay Deseret Foundation and the Department of Education (DepEd) Dumaguete.

In a ceremonial turnover held at the City Central Elementary School on 7 January 2019, students from the Babajuba Elementary School, Amador Dagudag Elementary School, City Central Elementary School, Cantil Elementary School, Camanjac Elementary School, Herminigilda Elementary School, Candau-ay Elementary School, Cadawinonan Elementary School, and Balugo Elementary School received prescription eyeglasses for free.

During the event, Dr. Neri Ojastro, DepEd Dumaguete Assistant Superintendent, lauded the initiative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for the said project. He explained that one of the reasons students have low performance in school is because of poor eyesight. They cannot either see the writings on the board or read their books or notes well.

With the help of LDS Charities’ partners, the recipients underwent a thorough assessment during a series of screenings held last December 2018 to identify those who will be receiving prescription glasses.

After the ceremonial turn over, the volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints distributed the eyeglasses to the beneficiaries.

Present during the ceremonial turn over were President Ferdinand Lantaca, Rogelio Montemayor, and John-John Gequinto, members of the Dumaguete Philippines Stake (Diocese) Presidency. Dinno Depositario, Human Resource Officer and Assistant Administrator, also attended the event on behalf of Mayor Felipe. Also present Rousana Duran, OIC-City Social Welfare and Development and school principals of the 10 schools. Ms. Nathalie Balota, Mabuhay Deseret Foundation, and representatives from the Dr. Sheila Catro-Bolls-Angeles Eye Clinic and Contact Lens Center also graced the event.
