A recorded Easter broadcast from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints premieres online Sunday, March 26, in 32 languages. “The Redeemer: An Easter Celebration” tells the story of the Savior’s life through art, music and scripture.
The hour-long Easter program, a year in the making, is the third Christ-centered production from the Church’s European areas.
“Commonly called the ‘cradle of Christian civilization,’ Europe enjoys a rich tradition of religious-themed artwork,” said Brian Cordray, an area manager in the Church’s Publishing Services Department.
“As we put this program together, the hope was to show how European artists from all ages have helped people draw closer to Christ through their inspired work. Some of the selected paintings may be more familiar than others, but all testify of the Lord’s eternal ministry.”
Filmed at the Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark, home of the famous Carl Bloch gallery, narrator Louis Herrey, a popular Latter-day Saint entertainer and Eurovision Song Content winner, introduces famous Christ-centered works of art from European artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Carl Bloch, Angelica Kaufmann, Henrich Hofmann, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bertel Thorvaldsen, Simon Dewey and others.
“Many have testified of receiving divine inspiration and spiritual guidance as they have humbly sought to draw closer to God through their artistic efforts,” Herrey states as the presentation begins. “Consequently, their works of art have inspired countless people to turn to the Savior as well.”
The introduction of each masterpiece is complemented by a performance from Latter-day Saint violinist Jenny Oaks Baker featuring music from her recent album, “The Redeemer.” Some of the 11 featured songs, composed and arranged by keyboardist and composer Kurt Bestor, are “The Chosen: God Love Us So He Sent His So,” “Mary Magdalene: O Divine Redeemer,” “Gethsemane: From Every Pore” and “He Lives: Theme from the movie ‘Lamb of God.’” Baker’s performances, accompanied by a youth orchestra and choir, were recorded in September 2022 on the movie set of the Church’s Bible Videos Series in Goshen, Utah.
Most recently, the Europen areas presented “Witnesses of Christmas – Symbols of Christ,” an hour-long Christmas concert filmed in the Charles Dickens Museum in London and the Roman Theatre of Merida in Spain that featured performances by popular European performers and was widely viewed during the past holiday season.
Each of these musical celebrations represents the Church’s efforts to extend the reach of the message of Jesus Christ’s birth, life, Atonement and Resurrection to a broader audience. Creators and Church leaders hope “The Redeemer: An Easter Celebration” will help all people connect with Jesus Christ during the Easter season when Christians throughout the world are worshiping Him.
“We are thrilled after doing Christmas concerts the past two years to finally have the focus on Easter,” Cordray said. “After all, without Christ’s Atonement and Resurrection, there would be no reason to celebrate the First Noel.”
